Lehigh Gap Mountain Top Loop HikeA short challenging hike with some fine views and some interesting history
We'll hike up a steep rocky slope in Lehigh Gap, past the George W. Outerbridge Shelter on the AT, up to the top of the ridge with fine views of Palmerton below, then back down a series of trails thru the recovering Palmerton Zinc Superfund Site, past the Marshall Mansion atop the red hill, and along the Lehigh River on the bed of the former Lehigh-New England RR. This is not a beginner's hike due to the steep 1000' ascent and rocky terrain. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Bring at least a liter of water and food/snacks. No pets please.

CANCELLED: AT Shuttle Hike: Eckville to Fort Franklin RoadA challenging hike which includes a 1000ft+ ascent and some very rocky terrain, and features stops at Dan's Pulpit, Balanced Rock, Tri-County Corner & Allentown Shelter. Not for beginners!
If you have the stamina for a steep ascent, are a confident rock hopper, and a fan of great vistas, you should enjoy this hike. We will move at a good clip on those portions of the trail that allow it, but we'll take our time over the numerous rocky stretches, and we will stop to enjoy the vistas (Dan's Pulpit, Balanced Rock) and features (Tri-County Corner, Allentown Shelter) along the way. We'll be shuttling from finish to start and back, so I'll be looking for volunteer drivers. Wear sturdy boots and bring at least 2 liters of water, lunch and snacks. No dogs. Rain cancels.

Essential Trail Maintenance WorkshopJoin a full-day workshop with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and Allentown Hiking Club on Father's Day to learn and apply new Trail Maintenance standards to the Appalachian Trail on Sunday, June 19th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. near New Tripoli, PA.
Please register though this link:
https://volunteer.appalachiantrail.org/s/atc-project-details?c__recId=a0q8Z00000BuNib
There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available throughout the Trail but one fun way to volunteer is to help with trail maintenance. Essential trail maintenance helps protect natural resources and improves the hiking experience. After grasping the basics, participants will be ready to join future work trips with A.T. maintaining clubs, or even adopt their own section of the Trail to maintain.
You gain valuable skills and conservation experience while alongside a welcoming community of dedicated individuals, benefit from a light workout, and get quality time outside as you make the A.T. a better place.
With almost 2,200 miles of Trail spanning across the east coast from Maine to Georgia, the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) provides a place of sanctuary from the bustle of the modern-day world for both human and wildlife communities alike. Since its inception as the first National Scenic Trail 100 years ago, the A.T. has always depended on volunteers - people like you who are willing to contribute their time, interest, and skills in order to make it all possible.
This training workshop will introduce new and experienced participants to modern maintenance practices for use on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. With a focus on safety, and based on area conditions, the course will be adapted to include relevant module options that may include: Trail Condition Assessment, Dealing with Water Issues, Brushing, Keeping Hikers on the Centerline, and Marking the Trail.
All tools, instructions, and personal protective equipment will be provided. You only need to bring the items listed below and an eagerness to participate in a hands-on stewardship learning opportunity.
Please be sure to wear long pants and sturdy boots. Bring plenty of water and snacks for the day, lunch, sunscreen, bug spray, a rain jacket and personal work gloves.
Advanced registration necessary. Complete the form using the “Express Your Interest” button below; this registers you for the event.
You will receive a confirmation email with the meeting location, curriculum for the course, and details related to COVID-19 precautions that will be followed that day.

Bake Oven Knob Graffiti Removal Effort June 25th and June 26thBake Oven Knob Graffiti Removal Effort June 25th and June 26th
The PA State Game Commission will be conducting another graffiti removal event on Bake Oven Knob on Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26. Optimistically hopping to achieve 100% graffiti removal. We got to at least 70% last year and removed decades worth of graffiti layers. Some graffiti has returned to areas cleaned last year, but it is fraction of what we started with. The new one layer tags clean up much easier too. If we achieve another great turnout, we will also target Bear Rocks.
Saturday we will meet at main parking lot at 5PM and plan to apply elephant snot graffiti removal product to BOK overlook areas. Treated areas will be allowed to set overnight so fire crews can start rinsing on Sunday morning. Treated areas will be closed off and signage will be posted along trail.
Sunday we will begin orientation at 8AM. We will target areas requiring reapplication, the remaining outlying graffiti areas, and hopefully Bear Rocks. We will also do a trash cleanup.
There will be a safety briefing on both days, and issuance of PPE and cleanup equipment. Everyone will need to sign a liability waiver and will be issued a wristband prior to start of any cleanup activities.
Please come prepared with long pants and suitable footwear. The product can stain clothes and burn skin if not rinsed off, so dress appropriately. Eye protection and rubber gloves will be issued, and will be required to be worn if working with removal product. Wash stations will also be setup so applicators can quickly rinse of any product that gets on skin.
There are multiple other opportunities to assist with this effort, if you are not looking to apply or rinse off product. We will also need water bearers, check in and equipment helpers, trash picker uppers, food stand help, and photographers.
Please spread the word and we hope to see you there.
Thank you for all your support with this endeavor.
