A 7 Mile Walk on the D&L Trail Starting From The National Canal Museum on Sunday December 13th at 1pm.COVID PROTOCOL CALLS FOR FACE COVERINGS WHEN UNABLE TO MAINTAIN A 6-FOOT SOCIAL DISTANCE.
Join us for a leisurely walk on a level trail which is a mix of paved, gravel and sometimes grass of the D&L Trail near Easton. We’ll start at National Canal Museum parking lot Easton, PA.
After introductions, I’ll provide a brief talk this well-developed and watered part of D&L canal. and the many historical and community activities that occur there. Though facilities are closed its worth hearing about the National Canal Museum and its mission, and the canal boat used for tours. More details at: www.canals.org.
The walk is essentially in two parts. First: we’ll walk upstream about 1 mile to the point where the canal boats entered back in to the canal after crossing the Lehigh River. We will see remnants of an old bridge that connected to Island Park Island Park is now wilderness but a century ago was a thriving amusement park.
Second: we’ll backtrack to the parking lot (an early bailout point if desired), then continue on the D&L trail just over 2.5 miles to the Forks of the Delaware where the Lehigh runs into the Delaware at Easton. We’ll see another canal lock and views of the Lehigh River on the way. One can easily return to the start point anytime.
There does not appear to be restrooms that are open, so please be prepared, (The portable potties used last week at the Riverview Park might be available but they on the other side of the river..!)
Dress for the weather! There may be some rain parts of the trail might be wet.
Please RSVP so we have some idea how many hikers we have.
